SummaryThis is one of a series of portraits of obscure transvestites. Warhol had made many portraits, including those of Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe. His portraits are either works that he initiated by choosing the subjects himself or works that he painted in response to commissions. The images are based on photographs of the subjects, and the artist transfers them onto the canvas using the silkscreen process. He applied the colors somewhat arbitrarily, not always adhering to the outlines, leaving clear evidence of the human hand. Besides creating vivid color effects, this process raises questions about the nature of art in the modern world, exploring the polarities of art and non-art, reality and fiction, original and duplicate, and the work of art as handicraft or a mass-produced commodity.
