Biography

Born in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. While teaching art at Virginia State University and other schools, also studied under Arthur Dove at Columbia University and was influenced by him. In 1917, held her first one-woman show at the 291 Gallery operated by the photographer Alfred Stieglitz, exhibiting abstract watercolor and drawings. Began a series of massive flowers and leaves in 1923-24. She Married Stieglitz in 1924. Began spending summers in New Mexico in 1929, and created works depicting the natural scenery of New Mexico. Moved to New Mexico full-time in 1949. Retrospectives of her work were held at the Museum of Modest Art, New York (1946) and at the Whitney Museum of American Art (1970). Died in Santa Fe.
