SummaryO'Keeffe's works are composed of strictly stoical forms, and the smoothly lobbed surfaces of her work have a pure, cool feel to them. And yet, at the same time, the organic forms and colors exude a raw sense of life force. The tension between these two opposing forces can be said to be one of the special fascinations of O'Keeffe's works. Flowers, trees, cliffs and hills, and animal skulls are some of the actual motifs she takes up in some works, while at the same time, her group of "abstract" works have their own sense of a mystical carnal life force. This work was created as one of a series of abstract works painted in the 1920s. The deep red color is reminiscent of blood and the long petal-like forms created a complex layered form. The dark deep spot which opens in the lower center has an extremely puzzling and carnal feel.
