Biography

Käthe Kollwitz was a printmaker and sculptor. She spent most of her life in the impoverished neighborhoods of northern Berlin, and her works are imbued with deep empathy for the poor and the oppressed. Driven by a deep sense of solidarity with the working class, she became closely associated with socialist movements. Although she began her career as a painter, she later turned to printmaking and produced her celebrated print series The Weavers' Revolt in 1898. From 1920 onward, she devoted herself primarily to woodcut printmaking, exploring the medium's powerful expressive potential. Although her range of subjects was relatively limited, her works possessed profound symbolic significance.
