SummaryA young man is seated with his knees together, and his lover sits on his lap, her head in his hands and her cheek pressed to his face. Her body twists to meet his as she faces upward. Lovers I of 1911 (no longer extant) was obviously influenced by Rodin’s The Kiss, while we can also see how this second version of 1913 is formally close to Minne’s Grieving Mother with Two Children and to Lehmbruck’s works in terms of the pose and the figures’ thin forms. The expression of the unified form of figures buried in the indistinct mass between them is one of the unique qualities of Kollwitz’s work, as seen in Tower of Mothers (1937–38), with its image of mothers encircling their children to protect them. The emotive expression of the young man’s large hands can also be found in many of Kollwitz’s other prints and in the relief The Lamentation, which she created upon the death of Barlach. In this work, the woman’s left arm, which hangs down, and her rounded back make it appear that the woman is in fact dead, and the shoulder blades protruding from the young man’s back may be a further expression of his suffering and love for this woman.
