Biography

Klein was born in Nice, France. He began painting and practicing judo in 1947. He came to Japan in 1952 and stayed for two years to study judo, earning a fourth-degree black belt. He moved to Paris in 1954 and held a solo exhibition of his monochrome works the following year. In 1957, he held an exhibition titled The Blue Epoch in Milan, presenting blue paintings in the color later named International Klein Blue. He subsequently undertook a wide range of activities that transcended conventional notions of art: The Void, an exhibition in which an empty gallery space was displayed; Anthropometries, performances featuring nude women whose bodies were coated with paint; and Fire Paintings, in which canvases were burned with a gas burner. He signed the Nouveau Réalisme manifesto in 1960. In 1962, he began a series of Portrait Reliefs but died of a heart attack in Paris that same year.
