SummaryIn a famous incident, Rodin was accused of having taken a direct cast from the model for The Age of Bronze because of its extraordinary realism. In the tradition of Western sculpture, taking a direct cast from the living body was strictly forbidden. Yet this taboo was deliberately broken by George Segal and Yves Klein in the 1960s, when every fixed idea about art was being called into question. Through two colors suggesting the transcendental and the powerful light emanating from behind, the body of an individual is transformed into something immaterial and ushered into the realm of eternity. Here Klein’s remarkable ability to move freely between the sacred and the secular, the individual and the universal, is displayed to its fullest.
