Biography

Raymond Duchamp-Villon was the brother of Marcel Duchamp and Jacques Villon. He began creating sculptures in 1899 and exhibited his works at the Salon d’Automne. At that time, his style was strongly influenced by Auguste Rodin. He later pursued volume through a somewhat retrospective style, and a group exhibition at Galerie La Poésie was a great success. He also continued to exhibit at the Salon d’Automne. During World War I, Duchamp-Villon served as a non-combatant physician in the French army. He continued to produce works during this period, including The Horse, which became one of his most important sculptures. He was later called to the front, where he contracted typhoid fever and died in Cannes as a result of the illness.
