SummaryDuchamp-Villon was concerned with integrating sculpture into architecture, and one way of doing this was to use reliefs to decorate wall surfaces. In this work, a male figure forcefully attempts to pull a female figure closer, but the woman's reaction appears ambivalent. The receding and protruding forms that jostle each other within this shallow space are unified, creating a powerful overall psychological effect. This relief is thought to be based on Maillol's relief Desire, exhibited at the Salon d’Automne of 1907, but its expression of sexual conflict between the man and the woman through dynamic abstract forms may also share similarities with a series of paintings created by Marcel Duchamp in 1912.
