Biography

Jim Dine was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He moved to New York in 1958 and began his artistic career there alongside Claes Oldenburg and other artists. Dine began as a performer in happenings, which were then at the height of their popularity. In the early 1960s, he began exhibiting paintings that featured familiar objects such as neckties. He also began attaching actual tools directly to his works, attracting attention as one of the Pop artists. He moved briefly to London during the latter half of the 1960s. After returning to the United States in the 1970s, he left the city and distanced himself from the urban phenomenon of Pop Art. Unlike other Pop artists, Dine had a strong interest in the body; his choice of subject matter was more personal, and he felt strongly about his subjects. As a result, a tendency toward Expressionism can be seen consistently throughout his work.
