SummaryThis work was shown alongside works by Warhol, Lichtenstein, and others in the New Realists exhibition held at the Sidney Janis Gallery in 1962, a turning point in the wider recognition of Pop Art. This association is one reason Dine is often classified as a Pop artist. The work takes as its motif a lawn mower, a tool found in virtually every mass-produced suburban American home after the war. Although Dine presents the lawn mower itself like one of Duchamp’s readymades, he does not stop there: he applies green paint to its surface and paints the background canvas with the blue of the sky and, in Abstract Expressionist brushstrokes, the green of flying grass clippings. Reflecting both its era and Dine’s characteristic fascination with tools, the work offers a distinctly Pop Art interpretation and expression.
