Biography

Dufy was born at Le Havre, France. He moved to Paris in 1900 and studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. In his early career he painted landscapes under the influence of Eugène Boudin and the Impressionists. After seeing a painting by Matisse at the Salon des Indépendants in 1905, he turned to a freer use of color and more simplified forms, painting lyrical Fauve works between 1906 and 1907. In 1908 he changed to an early Cubist style with subdued colors, but the end of the teens he had begun using vivid color again. In 1937, he painted a huge mural La fée électricité for the Pavilion of Electricity at the International Exposition in Paris. In his later years he developed a sophisticated style, concentrating on fashionable subjects like seaside resorts and orchestra musicians and executing the motif with fluent brushwork on wide expanses of thinly-applied color. He died at Forcalquier in the south of France.
