SummaryIn the summer of 1906 Dufy painted many landscapes near his home town of Le Havre in the company of Albert Marquet. This painting is a high point of his Fauve style, which was distinguished by refined color and a liberated sense of space. It is a view of the beach at low tide with vacationers strolling about, painted to a richly lyrical effect with relaxed brushwork and colors liberated from reality. Primary colors are avoided, and pinks and grays are used to create soft, bright tones, showing a delicate sensibility unique to Dufy which marks him off from other Fauve painters. The artist painted a number of other works of this same section of coast from a similar vantage point. This version is remarkably experimental.
