SummaryOne of the special features of this work is the broken lines which move in sinuous, never crossing themselves, horizontally across the page. If you look closely you can see that these lines graze the end of simply drawn houses, and motifs such as trees drawn solely with vertical lines combined with a few vertical lines and circular forms. Green, red, blue, and white are placed here and there on the base tone of a dark navy blue. We can surmise that the women's pavilion of the title is in the lower center of the work, with its curtain pulled back and held on both sides, and window-like darkness appears between them. The overall form looks like some sort of stage setup, and the horizontal lines can be seen as a musical notation or a landscape seen reflected on a watery surface. Like a child's drawing, and expression of an abstracted image through simple lines and simplified forms, and the use of oil colors in such a way that there is a layering of translucent pigments across a base color, all create a remarkable harmony of color, line, and form.
