SummaryThe bust portrait of a man line drawn on the paper was then applied to a textile collage and covered by polychromed acrylic panel. This work made from many layers and many mixed techniques is said to have taken two years to complete. A scared and shabby "thinker”, this figure floats out of the thin darkness in a hard, three-dimensional form. To borrow the artist's own words, an awareness of "Man's paradoxical and tragical existence" was the starting point for this work, and this surely is a comment on the position of the thinker in today's wretched society. Søbye painted the portraits of a number of fictitious people, and in his works these figures appear with an unforgettable sense of presence, one of firmness encompassing both strength and beauty. In that sense we can also see how, like his fellow Norwegians Munch and Ibsen, this work allows omens of bright hope to emerge from the dark shadows of reality.
