SummaryThis is the third work in the Tree Flesh, Earth Sword series. The first of these works was created in 1990 and was exhibited the following year in the Seven Artists: Aspect of Contemporary Japanese Art which traveled in America and Mexico. The work was titled Companionship and Waves in that exhibition. The title Tree Flesh, Earth Sword was used on the second and later works of this series which were exhibited in a one-man show in Tokyo while the first work was touring. And indeed it is probably appropriate to consider Companionship and Waves as the subtitle for this work. In 1990 Ito became a professor at the Joshibi University of Art and Design. The first inspiration for this series came from the scattered forms of the female students at noon on brand new campus grounds, scattered like tide pools of the sea. As can be seen in the appearance of the next topic name "Flesh and Sword" born out of digging down to the next level, the organic issues of "suppleness and stiffness," "gentleness and sharpness," continue as a theme in his work, linked from yet other angles.
