SummaryIn 1958 Rauschenberg created his first independent drawings. These were called transfer drawings. He would apply solvent and paper to a printed matter, and then create images by scrubbing them out in a "transfer" technique. This technique allowed for the easy creation of montage effects. Motifs linking life and memory appeal to the viewer as they appear scattered over the entire composition. Rauschenberg has said "I had to make a surface which invited a constant change of focus and an examination of detail. Listening happens in time—looking also has to happen in time", and he sought out viewers who would not simply glance at a work, but would rather slowly savor the details in repeated viewing. He envisioned works that stood on the divide between spatial arts and temporal arts.
