SummaryIn the postwar years, many artists who had been living and working in exile in the United States returned to Paris, and the most popular styles were Informel and Abstract Expressionism. There were also a large number of artists, including De Staël, who worked in a lyrical abstract style. During the period when he executed this work, his paintings were characterized by gray and brown tones and vigorously brushed linear elements. The deep, subtle colors and rich texture suggest the influence of his friend Braque. The dominant tones are light green and light blue, with subtle variations and pleasant accents of bright orange, blue, and white.
