SummaryNolde despised the industrial modern world as an evil force which destroyed nature and alienated humanity. He took an early interest in pre-modern and non-Western art in the process of trying to create a true German art. He visited New Guinea in 1913 to do artwork for a medical and demographic expedition organized by the German Colonial Office, and also stopped in China and Japan. The Noh mask and Tang equestrian figure in the painting, probably acquired during these travels, are still in the Nolde museum. The cushion cover was designed by Nolde and woven by his wife Ada. The plate painted with a scene of a Bacchanalian dancer was made by Nolde in 1913. This is a picture painted by the artist in a relaxed moment, using personal effects and memorabilia from his travels, and free from the obsessive visions which sometimes possessed him.
