SummaryThis painting makes use of the blurred effects identified with the moro-tai (fuzzy style), which played such an important role in the development of Japanese-style painting. Line was one of the most important elements of traditional painting, but the moro-tai painters, without using line, took a new, rational approach to space and subject matter, which had previously been depicted in a suggestive and symbolic way. These artists broke down the form of the subject, which had previously been depicted in an abstract, conceptual way with line, and created a newly liberated perception of the world while also making use of Western techniques. They explored the possibilities of a unique way of depicting subject matter that was more faithful to perception. Working with this extreme dissolution of form made it possible for Taikan, Shunso, and Kanzan, the greatest Japanese-style painters of their time, to produce their excellent works of the next decade.
