SummaryAfter returning to Japan, Kuroda introduced a style known as the “plein-air” school, which combined academic realism with the bright colors of Impressionism. This work was painted during the period of debate between the kyu-ha, the old school of Meiji-Period painters who advocated traditional Western-style painting, and the shim-pa, the new school, led by Kuroda. Kuroda and his fellow artists gradually came to establish the mainstream of Western-style painting in the late Meiji period, and Kuroda became an instructor in the Western Painting Department of the newly established Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1896 (Meiji 29).
This picture of a quiet village in the cold season, bathed in gentle sunlight, is painted in the new style, with the red of the laundry hanging near the center of the composition standing out effectively against the predominantly green and blue tones of the scene.
