SummaryThere are approximately forty titles in Rosso’s oeuvre and many of them have several versions. The original of this Sick Child was made while Rosso was hospitalized briefly in 1889. He used modeling to exploit the effects of touch and fuse the subject into a form resembling seething lava, as exemplified by Sick Man in the Hospital of the same period, while in this work light and shadow flow together in smooth undulations. He exploited wax for its softness and sense of color in the former case, and for its semi-transparency and light-transmitting qualities in the latter. The lower half of the titled face fades delicately into darkness and air in harmony with the narrative sentiment of the subject matter. The spontaneity of this simplified form had an influence on twentieth century sculpture, for example, Brancusi’s Sleeping Muse.
