Summary	There are approximately forty titles in Rosso’s oeuvre and many of them have several versions. The original of this Sick Child was made while Rosso was hospitalized briefly in 1889. He used modeling to exploit the effects of touch and fuse the subject into a form resembling seething lava, as exemplified by Sick Man in the Hospital of the same period, while in this work light and shadow flow together in smooth undulations. He exploited wax for its softness and sense of color in the former case, and for its semi-transparency and light-transmitting qualities in the latter. The lower half of the titled face fades delicately into darkness and air in harmony with the narrative sentiment of the subject matter. The spontaneity of this simplified form had an influence on twentieth century sculpture, for example, Brancusi’s Sleeping Muse.

1. Indicate the owner of the collection
Please indicate the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art as the owner of the collection. For pieces that are part of the Kimura Teizo Collection, credit “Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art (Kimura Teizo Collection)”, and for pieces from the Fujii Tatsukichi Collection, credit “Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art (Fujii Tatsukichi Collection)”.

2. Indicate any cropping or modifications
If you used a cropped version of the image, indicate that it is partial image. If you make any other modifications, please indicate that as well.

3. Get permission from third-party copyright holders
Even images that are marked as "Public Domain" or "CC0" may be copyrighted by a third party or subject to other rights. It is your sole responsibility as the user of these images to secure permission from any copyright holders. The museum will bear no responsibility for any violations resulting from image user actions.

4. Use of high-resolution images
If you would like to use high-resolution images then please contact Image usage representative.

2．Request non–public domain images

　Those who wish to use the types of images listed in (1)–(2) below must fill out a Image Usage Request after reviewing the Guidelines on the Use of Images and send it via email to our image usage representative (contact information provided below. For further information, please see "Image licensing").

*This includes images that are within the term of copyright protection and for which permission to transmit to the public has been obtained from the copyright owner, as well as images within the extent considered to be necessary (32,400 pixels or less) in the Article 47 of the Copyright Act.

3．Request regarding deliverables

Biography	Rosso was born in Turin, Italy. He entered the academy in Milan in 1881 but rebelled against its old-fashioned instruction and left the following year. Under the influence of anti-academic art movements such as Scapigliatura in Milan, he chose poor people, rather than gods and heroes, as his subjects and fused figures with their backgrounds in his sculptures. He achieved major innovations in sculptural technique, boldly omitting details and creating diffused light through modulations of touch. He worked briefly with Dalou in Paris in 1884. He exhibited at the Paris International Exposition of 1889, where he met Rodin, and the two artists influenced each other. He moved to Paris in 1900 and thereafter worked in France. Using wax as a material, he attempted to bring sculpture into harmony with the surrounding environment and designed his sculptures so that they would be viewed in reverse perspective. He expanded the possibilities of sculptural expression and was praised by the Italian Futurist Boccioni. He died in Milan.
