Summary	Lehmbruck’s characteristic elongation was first seen in a female figure. The form was appropriate to her melancholy expression, creating a tranquil enclosed space with a curving movement beginning at her bowed head. This male figure, on the other hand, standing with his left leg forward and his arms folded, is characterized by straight lines and an outwardly expanding space. The youth could be described as a spiritual self-portrait of the artist. His elongated limbs suggest an existence transcending the individual, indicating the aspirations of Parisian artists who dreamed of a new kind of human community in the future. The serious facial expression and the realistic features and joints give a strong aura to the figure, which seems to be bearing the world on its shoulders and aspiring to a higher reality. After the outbreak of World War I, Lehmbruck used the same male figure in tragic poses, crawling on the ground with lowered head as The Fallen (1915/16) and with bowed head as the Seated Youth (1916/17).

For pieces that are part of the Kimura Teizo Collection, credit “Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art (Kimura Teizo Collection)”, and for pieces from the Fujii Tatsukichi Collection, credit “Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art (Fujii Tatsukichi Collection)”.

2. Indicate any cropping or modifications
If you used a cropped version of the image, indicate that it is partial image. If you make any other modifications, please indicate that as well.

3. Get permission from third-party copyright holders
Even images that are marked as "Public Domain" or "CC0" may be copyrighted by a third party or subject to other rights. It is your sole responsibility as the user of these images to secure permission from any copyright holders. The museum will bear no responsibility for any violations resulting from image user actions.

4. Use of high-resolution images

2．Request non–public domain images

*This includes images that are within the term of copyright protection and for which permission to transmit to the public has been obtained from the copyright owner, as well as images within the extent considered to be necessary (32,400 pixels or less) in the Article 47 of the Copyright Act.

3．Request regarding deliverables

Biography	Lehmbruck was born in Meiderich on the outskirts of Duisburg, Germany. He first attended the School of Applied Arts and then the Academy of Art (from 1901 to 1907) in Düsseldorf. In his early career he was influenced by the Belgian sculptor Meunier and chose subjects with social significance, for example, laborers. Around 1905 he became aware of the works of Rodin and began to show a tendency toward emotional, inward-directed expression. In 1910 he moved to Paris where he came under the influence of Maillol and associated with Modigliani, Archipenko, and Brancusi. He established a unique style of elongated human figures with strong spiritual qualities, becoming the most representative sculptor of the German Expressionist movement. In 1919 he was made a member of the Prussian Art Academy but soon after committed suicide. The reported cause was his distress over the war and the difficulty he felt in reconciling form and feeling in art.
