Summary	This work by Gahō, a leading painter of the Kangakai, was created amid the movement to develop a new form of art in the early Meiji period. It is one of the most experimental and accomplished works of his career. While grounding his approach in the techniques of Chinese-style painting and looking to Sesshū and other masters as models, he explored how far he could go in depicting deep, three-dimensional space. The painting was formerly part of the Bigelow Collection at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and was returned to Japan in the early Shōwa period.

Biography	Hashimoto Gahō was born in Kobikichō, Edo (present-day Ginza). In 1846, he entered the studio of Kanō Seisen’in Osanobu, head of the Kanō school. That same year, he became a pupil of Kanō Shōsen’in Tadanobu and later came to be known, together with Kanō Hōgai, Kanō Shōgyoku, and Kimura Ryūgaku, as one of the four leading disciples of Shōsen’in. Amid the decline in demand for painting from the final years of the Edo period into the early Meiji era, he endured severe poverty and at one point worked as a draftsman for the Ministry of War. In 1884, he joined the activities of the Kangakai, an art society formed around Ernest Fenollosa, and, together with Hōgai and others, took part in efforts to create a new form of painting grounded in Japan’s traditional art. After serving at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and later resigning at his own request, he became a leading administrator at the founding of the Japan Art Institute and devoted himself fully to its management and instruction.
