| Summary | Takeuchi Seiho studied under a Shijo school master, but rather than remaining confined to the boundaries of his school, he actively studied various classics, beginning with Sesshu, and avidly expanded the possibilities of his expression. Furthermore, feeling the need to study Western art firsthand, he traveled to Europe in 1900 (Meiji 33). On that trip, while acknowledging the importance of “shaii” (expressing the inner spirit), which had been revered in traditional painting, he once again felt the necessity of studying real-life subjects and rendering light. He returned to Japan with a firm sense of confidence in his creations, without feeling any sense of inferiority toward the West. Afterward, Seiho was acclaimed for successfully blending Western watercolor techniques into Shijo school brushwork. He continuously unveiled realistic works characterized by gradations of brown tones, boosting his popularity. This work is an extension of such experiments. At a glance, it follows the traditional Shijo school format; however, the vivid depiction of the animal based on meticulous sketching, alongside the use of aerial perspective—which evokes the density of moisture-laden air and the light passing and drifting through it—demonstrates that he continued to create while staying true to the artistic issues and insights he gained during his trip to Europe. |
