SummaryDuring his career, Omoda moved from a brilliantly colored literati style influenced by Imamura Shiko to a more decorative style inspired by the Sotatsu-Korin school. When he was rejected by the Inten in 1919, he retreated to the country, living briefly in Sayama and then in Izumo, where he developed a new style based on direct sketching. One result of this determined effort was “Port of Ezumi in Izumo,” which paved the way for his membership in the Inten. The painting shown here was also a product of this period of intense study in Izumo. It was included in the solo exhibition of 1921 in which Omoda displayed the results of this period. A diagonal division from the upper right separates the land area from the sea and sky. The ridges of the thatched hipped roofs and the dark triangles of the small gable ends provide effective formal accents to the composition. After a hard winter, the fishermen are busily repairing their nets. Flowers are blooming in the fields. The delightful atmosphere of early spring in a fishing village, bathed in warm, soft sunlight, is captured in muted colors.
