Classification	Japanese-style Paintings
Accession Number	JJ198000012000
Summary	This is a late work by an artist who established his position in the art world with a rigorous, masculine style, then returned to his inherent poetic sensibility, creating a sweetly lyrical world in his later years. White plum blossoms are blooming profusely at the lower right of the picture, indicating that the season is spring and that this snow is unseasonal. There is a bamboo grove at the lower left and trees which appear to be pines covered with snow on the mountains in the center. While following the traditional theme of pine, bamboo, and plum based on straightforward sketches, this is a landscape created by Kyuujin, and the snow depicted is a visionary snow seen by the artist.

Biography	Yamamoto was born in Tokyo. His real given name was Masayoshi. After graduating from the Japanese-style painting section of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1924, he submitted work to the Shinko-Yamato-e-kai of Matsuoka Eikyu and his followers and won a prize. His art-world reputation was even more firmly established when his work was accepted by the official salons, the Teiten and Bunten. Kyuujin’s style during this period was marked by a feminine grace. After the war, he served as a judge of the Ninten. Disappointed with the conservative nature of the judging there, he joined with Uemura Shoko, Yoshida Kenji and others to found the Sozo-bijyutsu, which developed into the Japanese-style painting section of the Shinseisaku-kyokai and the Soga-kai, in an attempt to create a new kind of painting with an international orientation. His style changed radically during this period, becoming more masculine with bold, tough compositions, perhaps a reflection of the artist’s personal effort to create a new type of Japanese-style painting. Later he returned to a gracefully elegant style and in his later years made traditional paintings based on direct observation of nature. He died in Hiratsuka.
