SummaryNakamura Tsune (1887–1924), who contracted tuberculosis at the age of 17 in 1904, entered the Hakuba-kai Western Painting Research Institute in 1906. Thereafter, while battling illness, he studied the works of Rembrandt, Renoir, Cézanne, and other artists, pursuing an individual style of his own. The model for this work was Toshiko, the eldest daughter of Aizo and Kokkō Soma, the founders of Shinjuku Nakamuraya. Tsune, who lived in a studio behind Nakamuraya from late 1911, began painting Toshiko intensively around 1913, when she was a student at Joshi Seigakuin. The depiction of her young, healthy body shows the influence of Renoir, while the expression—with her lips firmly closed and her intelligent gaze directed toward the artist—and the vivid red of her lively cheeks reflect Tsune’s distinctive artistic style.
