SummaryBonnard visited southern France in 1909 and after his awakening there to the color expression found in its bright light-filled landscapes, Bonnard gave his major attention to both the composition of his works and the expression of color. This work was one of a series of experiments created when he encountered Monet's late works created when Monet lived in the neighborhood of the Seine, and it is thought that the depicted scene is of the Seine river bank. The forms of his wife Marthe and his dog Ubu can be seen sunk in the shadows in the right foreground, while children playing with animals are seen on the left further back. The overall composition is filled with brushstrokes giving the surface a dense feel, and the rich colors are emphasized by the blue and purple used in the backlighting and shad-way areas. These effects were suggested by Monet's water lily paintings and Venetian landscapes, while Bonnard also sought to heighten his own distinctive creativity. This work adorned the home of the Helena Rubinstein of cosmetics fame, and is a major new step forward towards Bonnard's latest works which earned him the name of "color magician."
