SummaryAsai was influenced by Fontanesi at the Kobu Bijutsu Gakko, and was the student who best inherited his teacher’s naturalist view. Even during the period when Western-style painting was not popular in Japan, he studied this poetic naturalism. Fontanesi, who had been influenced by the Barbizon school, was one of the top painters of his day in Italy and was revered by his students for both his character and painting skills. Asai’s Spring Field, exhibited at the first Meiji Bijutsu-kai exhibition held in 1889, was well received as an expression of his own realism, which was deep-rooted in the Japanese climate rather than merely following Fontanesi’s style. Painted two years earlier, this work is also a representative example of Asai’s early landscape paintings based on sketches created on the outskirts of Tokyo. The distant mountains and the row of houses lining the road from the foreground to the middle-distance reveal Asai’s unique expression, meticulous care in the arrangement of colors and composition, and keen attention to light.
