SummaryThis work was displayed in the Shoka-kai New Japanese-style Painting Exhibition held at Nihombashi Takashimaya from November 9 to 12, 1939. Kagaku died of an asthma attack on the 11th. While suffering from asthma, Kagaku based his life on the principle that “creating paintings is praying in a sealed room.” His concentration on painting enabled him to create a series of works that were intense expressions of his spirit and technical skill. Kagaku limited his subject matter to landscapes, peonies, camellias, and Buddhist subjects. He conducted an ongoing internal dialogue with these subjects as he gave birth to a purified realm of the heart and spirit. Kagaku was quite weak by the year of his death, and although his concentration had declined somewhat, this work shows a high degree of spiritual concentration in its severe yet flexible lines and lightly applied colors. It is a superb representation of Kagaku’s inner world, clearly filled with richness and purity.
