Biography

Born in Malden, Massachusetts. Entered Princeton University and majored in history. In 1958 debuted in the art work with his Black series of paintings of black stripes. At the same time he saw Jasper Johns's Flag and Target series at Leo Castelli's gallery and was strongly impressed by them. The sentiment negated Black series were predecessors to the trend which would become Abstract Expressionism. He then went on to create his shaped canvas works and his images of vivid competing colors known as his Protractor series, and then worked through relief imagery before creating full three dimensional sculpture. Stella fully experienced the trends of post-war American art.
