　00XBC0288～00XBC0294は時局諷刺雑誌『トバエ』の第1号から第7号である。1887年2月から1889年12月にかけて第69号まで刊行されたこの雑誌では、日本の風俗、近代化（西洋化）、国内外の政治などが皮肉たっぷりに描かれている。
　その歯に衣着せぬ語り口、描きっぷりから、当時の世相を一歩引いた目で見るための貴重な資料となり、《釣りの勝負（漁夫の利）》（第1号第5図、00XBC0288）や《社交界に出入りする紳士淑女（猿真似）》（第6 号第6 図、00XBC0293）など、歴史の教科書や資料集などで目にする作品もある。その過激な内容から検閲を受けたり、身内から自主規制するように絶えず助言を受けたりしていたようだが、それをネタにする強かさも持ち合わせていた（たとえば第3号第3図、00XBC0290）。

00XBC0288 – 00XBC0294 are issues nos.1 through 7 of the current affairs satirical magazine Tôbaé. This magazine was published from February 1887 to December 1889, for a total of 69 issues, and was a fully sarcastic look at Japanese customs, modernization (Westernization) and the governments of both Japan and other countries.
Judging from its biting commentary and depiction, the magazine is an important reference material for understanding the state of affairs then. Images such as Game of Fishing (No. 1, pl. 5,00XBC02884), and Sir and Madame Are Going out to a High Society Event (No.6, pl. 6, 00XBC0293) are works that can be seen in history textbooks and reference books. Tôbaé's extreme content led his friends to warn him that he might be censored if he did not selfcensor and tone down the content. Bigot laughed at this meddling and he stood strong in his Tôbaé work.
