解説　ビゴーは日本滞在の前半期に4作の版画集を出版している。1883年版および1885年版の石版画集『あさ』（当館は1885年版を収蔵。00XBC0295）、1883年の銅版画集『おはよ』（19XBC0001）、1884年の銅版画集『また』、そして、1886年の銅版画集『クロッキ・ジャポネ』である。いずれもビゴーが丹念に観察・スケッチした日本の風俗を中心とする作品集であり、日本の文化への新鮮な興味を感じさせる初期のものから徐々に描写の緻密さを増し、洗練されたものとなっていく。　
　銅版画集『ル・ジャポン』はそれらに続く形で1889年に出版を準備されていたが、実現しなかったとされる幻の版画集である。清水勲氏によれば、刊行が取りやめになる前に10点ほどが完成されており、その中には当館所蔵の《立姿の花魁》（00XBC0275）、《着物を脱ぐおんな》（00XBC0152）、《子守り》（00XBC0276）も含まれていたという。また、同じくここに収録される予定であったという《暖簾に手をかけた女性》は当館所蔵の水彩画《京都 宿屋の女中 おカメさん》（00XBC0159）に基づく作品のようだ。清水氏の説は根拠とするところが明確にされておらず、その真偽のほどは明らかではないが、もしこの通りに作品集が完成していれば、その芸術性の高さからビゴー銅版画集の最高傑作となり得ただろう。

Bigot published four print albums during the first half of his time in Japan. These are the lithograph album Asa published in both 1883 and 1885 (the Utsunomiya version is the 1885 edition, 00XBC0295); the 1883 etching album Ohayo (19XBC0001), the 1884 etching album Mata and the 1886 etching album Croquis Japonais. All of these albums focus on Bigot's carefully observed and sketched images of Japanese customs. At first, they reveal his vivid interest in Japanese culture, but gradually he adds more detailed and intricate depiction to create more refined works.
His etching album Le Japon continues in that form and was prepared for publication in 1889, but it remains a mystery album that was never actually published. According to Shimizu Isao, he had completed about ten images before the decision was made to cancel the publication. Those works included Standing Oiran (00XBC0275), Woman Removing her Kimono (00XBC0152) and Minding the Baby (00XBC0276). Another work scheduled for inclusion in that album Woman Opening the Noren Curtain was based on a watercolor in the Utsunomiya collection (00XBC0159). While the basis for Shimizu's theory is unclear and hence its veracity unknown, if the album had been completed the artistic superiority of these works would have made it his best etching album.
