解説　1899年にフランスに帰国したビゴーはしばらくの間、生まれ育ったパリに居を構えた。しかし、そこがあまりにも騒がしく人工的な町であることを嫌って、あるいは小児麻痺にかかった長女の療養のために、自然に囲まれた郊外のビエーヴルに転居する。この土地が気に入ったのか、ビゴーはこの町の丘の中腹に土地を買い、広々とした日当たりの良いアトリエを建てる。そこに石や竹、築山や木の灯籠などのモティーフを集め、日本風に庭を飾ったという。
　本作は、そのアトリエからの景色を描いたものだと考えられる。画面からは、ここで過ごした晩年の日々の穏やかさが伝わってくるかのようだ。本作に基づいて制作されたと考えられるリトグラフおよび本作と同じ視点から描かれた水彩画の存在が確認されている。

Bigot lived in Paris, where he had been born and educated, for a while after his return to France in 1899. However, he hated the noisy and artificial town that it had become, and when his older daughter contracted polio he moved the family to Bièvres, as mall town in the countryside. For some reason he became interested in this area, and bought land halfway up the town's hill, and there built a large studio with good light. He created a Japanese style garden,with rocks, bamboo, artificial hillocks and wooden lanterns.
This work is thought to depict the scenery visible from that studio. The composition ably conveys a sense of the peaceful days of his later years spent in that studio. There are also an extant lithograph thought to have been based on this sketch and a watercolor drawn from the same vantage point.
