解説　『ジュルナル・デ・ヴォワヤージュ』誌所収のL. クンツの記事「古き日本の正月」の挿絵として同誌840号表紙を飾った図の下絵である（Journal des voyages, n°840,5 janvier 1913, p.97）。同記事では、年末年始の日本の風習について、正月飾りや食文化にも触れながら細かく紹介している。クンツは冒頭、近代化によって日本人たちは古くからの風習を忘れつつあるが、正月のお祝いの様子からはそうした古い風習がどれほど面白いものであるかを確かめられると述べている。日本文化についてのこのような考え方は、ビゴーの考えと近いものであると言えよう。
　また、末尾では日本の正月がフランス人のそれと類似していると述べる。クンツによれば、いずれの国においてもそれは家族の、特に子どもたちのお祭りであり、親しみがあって愛情に満ちた日なのだという。ビゴーの作品においても、晴れやかな雰囲気の中、人々は親しく挨拶を交わし、子どもも楽しそうな様子である。ビゴーは正月の挨拶という主題を気に入っていたようで、絵皿のデザインにも用いており（00XBC0302）、そこでもまた子どもが登場している。

This is the preparatory drawing for a picture that adorned the cover of Journal des voyages, No.840, published on January 5, 1913, to illustrate the article by L. Kuentz (p. 97) about New Year's in old Japan. This article introduces Japanese year end and New Year's customs, providing a detailed description of New Year's decorations and food customs. Kuentz starts his article by saying that modernization is making the Japanese forget old customs but that New Year's customs indicate how interesting such old customs were. We can probably say that this author's thoughts on Japan thus aligned with those of Bigot.
At the end of the article, he noted that Japanese New Year's was similar to that of the French. According to Kuentz, both countries saw this time as a festival for family, particularly children, and that it was a day filled with love and affection. Bigot's works also have a bright mood, showing people exchanging close greetings and children having fun. It seems that Bigot was interested in the subject of New Year's greetings, and also used this theme on his painted dishes (00XBC0302). A Child also appears in that image.
