解説　ビゴーは日本滞在中に何人もの女性と浮名を流した末、1895年に士族の娘である佐野マスと結婚し、同年に息子ガストン・モーリスが誕生した。しかしながら、その後の妻との関係は必ずしも良好だったわけではなさそうで、1899年に離婚が成立、同年にビゴーは息子を連れてフランスへと帰国した。
　帰国の翌年にビゴーはマルグリット・デプレと再婚。彼女はまだ0歳だった娘イヴォンヌ＝アンドレを連れていた。その後、1904年頃にはふたりの間に次女ジャンヌも誕生している。
　本作は結婚から2年後の1902年に妻を描いた作品。着飾ったモデルの横顔が描かれ、形式的には伝統に則したものだが、同時に落ち着いた雰囲気で親しみを感じさせる。夫婦の間の信頼関係が表れた温かみのある作品となっている。

After being involved with various women in Japan, in 1895 he married a former samurai class woman named Sano Masu. Their son Gaston Maurice was born that same year. However, their relationship did not prosper and in 1899 they were divorced, and that same year Bigot and his son left for France.
The year after his return to France Bigot married Marguerite Déprez. She had a daughter Yvonne Andrée then less than a year old. Then later, around 1904, a second daughter, Jeanne, was born to the couple.
This portrait depicts his wife in 1902, two years after their marriage. Seen in profile, all dressed up, the model is shown in stylized, traditional form, but at the same time, there is a relaxed air, a sense of intimacy.The work reveals the warm sense of trust between the married couple.
