解説　1896年6月15日に発生した明治三陸地震は最大震度4とそれほど大きなものではなく、地震による直接の被害は限定的であったが、地震から約30分後、それによって引き起こされた大津波が三陸海岸を襲い、現在の大船渡市を中心に甚大な被害をもたらした。　
　ビゴーは遅くとも6月中には現地入りし、被害の状況を取材している。大船渡の盛村を描いた00XBC0099および00XBC0100に映し出された風景は、2011年の大津波後の東北の景色を嫌でも思い出させるような凄惨なものだ。00XBC0101～00XBC0104の4点に描かれた「せんうん寺」は、同じく盛村に位置し、この災害に際して本堂に臨時の病院が設置された洞雲寺ではないかと推測されるが、詳細は不明である。ビゴーのスケッチは『ザ・グラフィック』紙に送られ、同年9月26日号に掲載された。

The Meiji Sanriku Earthquake struck on June 15, 1896. It was not a large one at 4 on the Japanese scale with not much direct damage. However, about 30 minutes after the earthquake a massive tsunami hit the Sanriku coast causing great damage, centered on present-day Ôfunato city.
At the latest, Bigot was on site in June and gathering material about the damage. 00XBC0099 and 00XBC0100 drawn in Sakarimura in Ôfunato reflect the scene, which was horrific, conjuring harsh memories of the scene in Tôhoku after the 2011 tsunami. The four works 00XBC0101–00XBC0104 depict Senunji, which is thought to be Tôunji, also located in Sakarimura, a temple whose Hondô was used as a temporary hospital, but details are unclear. Bigot sent his sketches to The Graphic, which published them in the September 26 issue.
