解説　00XBC0077、00XBC0080～00XBC0088、00XBC0091～00XBC0094の14点はロシアにかかわる作品たちであり、1893年に極東の国際情勢を調査するために取材でロシアを訪れた際のスケッチであると考えられる。この旅でビゴーはウラジオストックとニコルスキー（現在のウスリースク）を訪れたようだ。1896年に発表された画集『シベリアのクロッキー』は、この時の取材の成果であると考えられる。
　1893年の年記のある《朝鮮 元山の眺め》（00XBC0090） はロシアへの渡航の途に目にした朝鮮・元山の景色であろう。また、中国領の時代が長く、現在でも中国市場の残るウラジオストックやニコルスキーでは中国人や中国文化に出会うこともしばしばであったと考えられ、同じく1893年の年記のある《中国人たちの市場で》（00XBC0089）はウラジオストックあるいはニコルスキーにある中国系の市場を描いたのではないだろうか。また、《ウラジオストックの思い出 ロシアの人々》（00XBC0087）の中央に描かれている女性とよく似た装束の女性が登場する《中国人たちの市場》（00XBC0195）もまた同様であると考えられる。《中国人たちの市場》の基底材は00XBC0080、00XBC0081、00XBC0083とほぼ同寸であり、同じスケッチブックに描いたものが切り離されたものと想定できる。
　この旅でロシアに渡る前に上海に立ち寄ったとの指摘もあるが、上記のことを踏まえると、いまひとつ根拠が見えない。上海に関する作品たちは、翌年の日清戦争の取材の際か、あるいは1899年にフランスへ帰国するための船が立ち寄った際に制作されたものと思われる。

Fourteen works on display, 00XBC0077,00XBC0080-00XBC0088 and 00XBC0091-00XBC0094, are on Russian subjects. These are allthought to be sketches Bigot made when he visited Russia in 1893 to survey the international state of affairs in the Far East. It seems that Bigot visited Vladivostok and Nikolsky (present-day Ussuriysk). His picture book ≪Sketches of Siberia≫ published in 1896 is thought to have been based on sketches made during this trip.
≪Korea, A View of Wonsan≫ (00XBC0090) has a date inscription of 1893, and it seems to show Wonsan, Korea, which he visited on the ferry to Russia. Given that the Vladivostok and Nikolsky area was long under Chinese rule, it is thought that Bigot would have encountered Chinese people and customs in Vladivostok and Nikolsky, with their Chinese markets still active today. ≪At the Chinese Market≫ (00XBC0089) dated by inscription to 1893, is thought to have been painted in the Chinese market in either Vladivostok or Nikolsky. Similar circumstances are thought to have been the case for ≪Chinese Market≫ (00XBC0195), which has a woman wearing the same dress as the one who appears in the center of ≪Souvenir of Vladivostok, Russians≫ (00XBC0087). The paper used for ≪Chinese Market≫ is about the same size as 00XBC0080, 00XBC0081 and 00XBC0083 and thus we can posit that it is a drawing torn out of the same sketchbook.
Some have suggested that he visited Shanghai on this trip to Russia, but given the above information, there is at this point no evidence for such a claim. The works related to Shanghai can be thought to be either sketches made during the First Sino-Japanese War the following year, or when he visited the city while taking the boat home to France in 1899.
