解説　00XBC0064～00XBC0074は1888年7月15日に発生した磐梯山の噴火に際し、取材に訪れたビゴーが制作したスケッチである。被災者と彼らの救助や治療にあたる人々、倒壊した建物など、被災直後の村の様子を視覚的に伝える貴重な資料となっている。
　この時制作されたスケッチの少なくとも一部がフランスの『ル・モンド・イリュストレ』紙に送られたようで、12月1日の号には磐梯山噴火を扱った記事とビゴーによる挿絵、あるいは彼のスケッチに基づいてジェラルダンという人物が描いた挿絵が掲載されている（Le Monde Illustré, n°1653, 1er décembre 1888, pp.344-345, 347.）。これらの挿絵の多くは当館所蔵の作品に基づくものか、あるいはそれらを組み合わせて制作されたと考えられるものである。
　「BEK KAÏ」という署名の付された同記事は、読みようによってはビゴー自身が書いたようにも思えるが、詳細は不明である。大鯰が地震を引き起こすという日本の伝説に触れた穏やかな文章から始まる同記事は、被害状況を挿絵以上に生々しく伝えており、読むだけで恐ろしさを感じるほどである。

Numbers 00XBC0064-00XBC0074 are sketches that Bigot made on site after Mt. Bandai erupted on July 15, 1888. The injured, the rescuers and those helping them, the destroyed buildings—these sketches are important visual records of the destroyed villages immediately after the eruption. At least some of the sketches made at that time were dispatched to the French newspaper Le Monde Illustré. The December 1st issue of that paper published an article on the Mt. Bandai eruption, Bigot's illustrations and illustrations by someone named Gérardin based on Bigot's sketches. (Le Monde Illustré, No. 1653, December 1, 1888, pp. 344–345, 347). The majority of those illustrations are based on works in the Museum collection, or are thought to have been made from combinations of those images.
This article signed "BEK KAÏ" reads as if Bigot himself wrote it, but the details of its authorship are unclear. This article which starts out with a calm description of the Japanese folk custom about giant catfish setting off earthquakes then goes on to provide a vivid description of the scene, one that goes beyond the imagery in the illustrations. Just reading the article one senses how frightening the event was in person.
