解説　修善寺の町を流れる修善寺川（桂川）はいくつもの美しい景観を生み、町の人々はもとより、観光や湯治に訪れる人々、執筆・制作のために逗留する文人墨客などにも愛されてきた。
　本作は、修善寺川沿いの水月屋の辺りから見た、蟇ヶ淵やその向こうの渡月橋を描いた作品であると考えられる。歌川広重もまた、『六十余州名所図会』のうち《伊豆 修善寺湯治場》において、より俯瞰的な視点ではあるが同じ辺りからの風景を描いている。昭和初期頃のものと思われる写真と比較してみると、ビゴーが川沿いの建物まで忠実に描いていることがわかる。
《修善寺 早瀬に面した宿》（00XBC0052）は「馬の湯（馬の健康のために馬を入れていた温泉）」を描いた作品であると考えられるが、馬の湯は水月屋から下りたところにあった。したがって、ビゴーは水月屋に宿を取ってこれらの作品を描いていたのかもしれない。

There are several lovely places along the Shuzenji River (Katsura River) that runs through the town of Shuzenji, and they came to be enjoyed not only by the townspeople, but also by the tourists and visitors to the hot springs, and the many literati and writers who noted them for future use.
This work looks from near the Suigetsuya along the Shuzenji River to Gamaga-Fuchi and the Togetsukyô Bridge beyond. Utagawa Hiroshige's ≪Hot Springs at Izu-Shuzenji≫ in his "Famous Sites in Sixty-odd Provinces" series presents a landscape in the same area from a bird's-eye view angle. A comparison with a photograph thought to date to about the early Shôwa period shows that Bigot has faithfully depicted the buildings along the river.
≪Shûzenji, Inn Facing the Stream≫ (00XBC0052) is thought to depict the "Uma-no-Yû horse hot springs" where horses were bathed for their health, however that site is located further downriver from the Suigetsuya. Thus, Bigot may have stayed at the Suigetsuya while he produced these various works.
