解説　00XBC0048～00XBC0059は、1887年7月から9月の頃にビゴーが休暇で伊豆方面に旅行した際に制作されたスケッチや水彩画である。この旅行の様子は《母親宛の絵手紙》およびそれに付された《1887年夏、伊豆旅行の旅程図》（00XBC0063a,b）に詳しく記されている。それによれば、ビゴーは東海道を通って箱根に行き、そこから北上して富士のふもと須走に滞在。その後、沼津を経由して修善寺へ。修善寺で三週間を過ごした後、熱海には2か月余り滞在する予定であると語っている。
　また、この旅で制作されたスケッチのいくつかは『トバエ』で発表されている。「おもしろいスケッチを求めて」彼が旅に出発することが12号で告げられると、12号と13号では修善寺、14号と15号では熱海の様子を描いた作品が紹介されている。その中には、上記の当館所蔵のスケッチを下絵とする版画もいくつか含まれている。
　上記の手紙でも述べられているように、この旅行はただの休暇ではなく、「まさに日本的」なもの、「古き日本、黄金時代そのもの」を求めての美的探究の旅でもあった。実際、この旅行の際に制作された、あるいはそれをきっかけに描かれた油彩画が残っており、当館にもそのいくつかが所蔵されている（00XBC0001、00XBC0006～00XBC0008、00XBC0025）。そこには、近代化以前の日本の景色とそこで素朴に生きる人々の姿が映し出されている。

00XBC0048–00XBC0059 are sketches and watercolors created by Bigot in the Izu region when he stayed there for a rest from July to September 1887. Details of this trip were noted in the letter to his mother and the attached ≪Summer 1887, Izu Trip Route≫ (00XBC0063ab). According to those notes, Bigot followed the Tôkaidô to Hakone and then headed north and stayed at Subashiri at the base of Mt. Fuji. Then he traveled via Numazu to Shuzenji and spent three weeks in Shuzenji. He spoke of planning to stay in Atami for more than two months.
He also published several of the sketches made on this trip in Tôbaé. He announced in issue No. 12 that he was taking a trip "in search of interesting sketches" and introduced works depicting Shuzenji in issue Nos.12 and 13, and Atami in issues Nos. 14 and 15. Among these works, the Utsunomiya collection includes several examples of the preparatory sketches.
As also noted in the above-mentioned letter, this trip was not simply for a rest, it was also an aesthetic search for him, seeking all the more Japanese things, old Japan, the golden age itself. In fact, the Utsunomiya collection includes the works produced on this trip and the oil paintings made from those drawings, namely 00XBC0001, 00XBC0006 –00XBC0008 and 00XBC0025. These works depict the pre-modernized Japanese scenery, and the people simply living in those settings.
