解説　ビゴーは1886年に日光を初めて旅したとされる。00XBC0040、00XBC0043、00XBC0044、04XBC0001は、その際に制作されたものだろう。笠間日動美術館所蔵の油彩画《日光馬返し つたや》には「1886年8月30日」の年記が入っているが、上記の当館所蔵の作品たちの年記を確認すれば、9月8日に上徳次郎、9月9日に大沢、そして翌10日にも大沢の風景を描いたこととなり、馬返しから上徳次郎、大沢へと、日光街道を行きつ戻りつしていることになる。日付を書き間違えたのでなければ、また、仮に間違えであったとしても、これらの作品たちからは、ビゴーがこの街道の景色に親しみを覚えながら丹念にスケッチを行っていたことが感じ取れるだろう。

Bigot took his first trip to Nikkô in 1886. 00XBC0040, 00XBC0043, 00XBC0044 and 04XBC0001 were probably all produced at that time. Kasama Nichido Museum of Art's oil painting ≪Tsutaya, in Umagaeshi, Nikkô≫ bears a date inscription of August 30, 1886. The dates of the above mentioned works in the Utsunomiya collection are September 8 depicts Kamitokujira, September 9, Ôsawa, and the 10th also depicts a scene at Ôsawa. These allow us to trace how Bigot traveled up and back on the Nikkôkaidô, from Umagaeshi to Kamitokujira to Ôsawa and back. If there are no mistakes in the date inscriptions, or even if there is, we can sense from these careful sketches that Bigot made them as he fondly admired the scenery along the Nikkôkaidô.
