解説　ビゴーは日本に向かうため、MM 汽船会社（Messageries Maritimes 社）の運行する客船ペイ＝ホ号（Le Peï-Ho）に乗ってマルセイユを出発し、香港へ向かった。途中、1882年1月14日にサイゴンから出した母親宛ての手紙が確認されている。
　本作への記載からは1881年11月11日にマルセイユを発ち、この黒塗りの船に乗って香港に到着、その後タナイス号（Le Tanaïs）に乗り換えて横浜に1882年1月21日に到着したと読みとることができる。しかしながら、ビゴーと同船したJ. C.ヘボンが兄弟に宛てた手紙での記述から、ビゴーがフランスを発ったのは12月11日とされる。また、当時のペイ＝ホ号は白い船体をしていたことから、本作はビゴーが出国時に描いたものではなく、船体の黒いペイ＝ホ号が登場した後になって描いたスケッチに、来日時の記憶を記したものであるとの指摘もある。グアッシュで描かれた《フランス郵船ペイホー号》（1882年制作）の存在が確認されているが、これは本作を元にして描かれたのではないだろうか。
　香港でMM汽船会社のタナイス号に乗り換えたビゴーは1月26日に横浜に到着し、いまむら屋で食事をして《横浜到着の日 いまむら屋旅館にて初めての和食》（00XBC0030）を制作したとされる。

Bigot boarded the Messageries Maritimes' passenger ship the Peï-Ho in Marseilles, bound for Hong Kong on his journey to Japan. En route, he sent a letter to his mother from Saigon on January 14, 1882.
Given the information on this painting, he set off from Marseilles on November 11, 1881, boarded the black-painted ship and disembarked in Hong Kong. Then he transferred to the Tanaïs and sailed to Yokohama where he disembarked on January 21, 1882. However, the letter written by his fellow passenger on the Peï-Ho, J. C. Hepburn, indicated that Bigot departed France on December 11th. Another scholar has indicated that at the time the Peï-Ho was a white ship, and thus this work was not painted when he left France, but rather that he made these notes from memory after arriving in Japan based on a sketch depicting the Peï-Ho after it was painted black.
Bigot transferred to the same shipping company's Tanaïs in Hong Kong and arrived in Yokohama on January 26, and then is said to have depicted his first meal in Japan, at the Imamuraya(00XBC0030).
