解説　ビゴーは1886年の夏に初めて日光を旅したと考えられている。つたやを描いた作品としては、本作とは逆方向からつたやを見て、そこに向かって坂を上っていく自らの姿を描き入れた作品《日光馬返し つたや》（笠間日動美術館蔵）が知られる。同作には、「1886年8月30日」の年記とともに、奥日光の宿の者たちの卑しさと、それに引き換えこの宿の人々が大変親切である旨が記され、同胞がここを訪れたのなら是非ここに宿泊するよう勧めている。この宿での良い思い出を忘れることはなかったようで、ビゴーが帰国後『イリュストラシオン』紙に提供した挿絵《日本の大軍事演習 ―民家での宿営、ご飯を炊いてもらう兵士たち》（L’Illustration, N°3168, 14 novembre 1903, p.321.）では、兵士たちが休息する広い邸宅に「つたや」の看板がかかっている。　
　本作《日光 馬返しの宿 つたや》とほぼ同じ視点で撮影された写真《日光馬返しの茶店》（撮影者・撮影年代未詳）が長崎大学附属図書館「幕末・明治期日本古写真コレクション」に収められている（目録番号1183、整理番号26-2-0、鈴木真一（II）写真館 URL. http://oldphoto.lb.nagasaki-u.ac.jp/jp/target.php?id=1183 アクセス日2020年11月20日）。地形や建物はもちろん、植生や石、宿に掲げられた幟の存在までもが両者に共通しており、ビゴーが実際の風景を非常に忠実に描写していたことが見て取れる。

Bigot is thought to have first visited Nikkô during the summer of 1886. Another work drawn at Tsutaya shows the inn from the opposite angle and up the slope, including a view of himself (≪Tsutaya, in Umagaeshi, Nikkô≫, Kasama Nichido Museum of Art). This work bears a date inscription August 30, 1886, and mentions in detail the vulgarity of the people at some inns in Oku-Nikkô, compared to the gentility of these at this new inn and how if you visit the area, definitely choose this latter inn. Bigot did not forget his memories of staying at the inn. After returning to France, he published an image in L'Illustration (No.3168, Nov. 14, 1903, p. 321) titled "Japanese Military Exercises: Soldiers Bivouacked in Civilian Inns Which Provide Meals." The expansive building where the soldiers are resting bears a sign "Tsutaya."

The topography, buildings, plants, rocks and banners hanging from the inn veranda are all the same in Bigot's work and in this photograph, reflecting Bigot's faithful depiction of actual scenes.
