Isuzu-Metz Ladder Truck

DescriptionThis fire engine was imported in 1925, given the designation of Number 3 Ladder Truck, and stationed at the Number 1 Fire Station (present day Nihonbashi Fire Station) . It was active during the Shirokiya Fire in Nihonbashi in 1932. The original chassis wore out and was replaced with a new one and fitted with a Karl-Metz ladder in 1959. A control unit was incorporated that could extend the ladder horizontally even if the road was sloped which shows how safety measures were being implemented at that time. Additionally, the fully mechanical ladder could immediately deploy after arriving at the scene of a fire at a speed said to surpass even modern-day hydraulic ladders. This engine was in service until 1971.
