| 作品解説 | 山口は日本の抽象芸術の先駆的な存在として活躍した作家の一人である。この作品は山口がモダンアート協会を結成した年の作で、彼の作品がにわかに脚光を浴びる1940年代の終わりから50年代にかけての色面構成的な画風の典型を示している。山口の作品には榛名山を仰ぐ郷里の自然をバックボーンに、牛、馬、鳥といった題材がよく扱われるが、ここでも体を寄せ合う2頭の馬の姿が、優しく深い愛情を込めて描かれている。背景に、山口作品の魅力の一つである朱と緑の組み合わせが構成的に描かれている。作家が具象と抽象の両方に心惹かれながら、自らの原風景を作品へと昇華させたことが窺える。 |
