解説最初長岡市出身の洋画家小山正太郎が主宰する不同舎に学んだ坂本は、その後めまぐるしく画風を変化させながら、本作に見られるような独自の内面性を表出させる画境に達します。当時、坂本が住んだ雑司ヶ谷周辺は東京郊外でも有数の牛乳の供給地であり、そこで身近な存在であった牛は、1910年代、繰り返し描かれる重要なモティーフになりました。全体がモノクロームに近い抑制された色調で統一され、その中に佇む牛には、坂本の哲学的な思索の跡が見られるようです。

SAKAMOTO first studied art at Fudosha, a school run by KOYAMA Shotaro, a western-style painter from Nagaoka City. His style of painting rapidly changed as he reached a stage where he could express his unique inner character, as can be seen in this work. The area around Zoshigaya, where SAKAMONOTO lived at the time, was one of the leading areas for supplying milk to the suburbs of Tokyo, and the cattle there became an important motif repeated throughout the 1910s. The whole work is unified with suppressed colors, close to monochrome, and the cow standing in the frame shows traces of Sakamoto’s philosophical thinking.
