| 解説 | 巴御前は平安末期の武将・木曽義仲の愛妾であり平家討伐に従軍して勝利に貢献しました。本作では戦支度をする様子が描かれますが、『平家物語』で「色白く髪長く、容顔まことにすぐれたり」と記された巴御前の表情が印象的です。作者である尾竹国観は、兄・竹坡、越堂とともに兄弟で活躍した日本画家です。本作は、横山大観との確執から不出品を続けていた国観が12年ぶりに第11回帝展に出品した大作で、歴史画を得意とした彼の技量が遺憾なく示されています。 Tomoe Gozen was a concubine to military commander Kiso Yoshinaka in the late Heian era and contributed to victory over the Taira clan. In this work, she is depicted preparing for war, but in "The Tale of the Heike", she is described as “fair-skinned, with long hair and very beautiful.” Artist OTAKE Kokkan was known alongside his brothers, Chikuha and Etsudo. This masterpiece was exhibited at the 11th Teiten Exhibition, after a feud with YOKOYAMA Taikan had prevented him from participating for 12 years, and his skill as a history painter is on full display. |
