| 解説 | 19世紀後半、ブリュッセルでは都市開発が進められ、男性像柱（アトラント）、女性像柱（カリアティード）が建築装飾の意匠として流行しました。本作は街の大通りに面した5階建ての建物の、3階のバルコニーを支えるように設置されていました。まだ名声を得る前の作品ですが、上体の圧倒的な量感、皮膚の表面に浮き立つ陰影に、すでに高いレベルにあったロダンの実力がうかがえます。ロダンの貴重なオリジナル作品として、当館開館以来エントランスに設置されています。 Columns depicting men and women (called “atlantes” and “caryatides,” respectively) were popular as decorative architecture as urban development progressed in Brussels during the second half of the 19th century. This work was installed to appear to support the balcony of the third floor of a five-story building facing a large street. Although this work was created before Rodin’s rise to fame, the overwhelming sense of bulkiness created by the upper body and the gentle shadows on the skin show that Rodin was already incredibly skilled. This work has been installed at the entrance of the museum since its opening, a valuable original work of Rodin. |
